Course content
In the management training the participants get the opportunity to learn about organization
processes (why are things organized, or not organized, as they are?) and management issues (how
can I influence these processes) in relation to there own organisation. They also get the opportunity
to learn practical skills that can help them function better in their role.

In the first part of the course the focus is on “Managing the context”. The primary task is exploring
influences from the context (surrounding) on the organization: in what way is your organization
influenced by the national politics, cultural aspects, historical events, technological development, other
countries or international organisations?

In the next part the emphasis is on “Managing the organization”. Here the primary task is exploring
the processes in the organisation and/or departments: how is your organisation structured? What is
the influence of the organisational culture? Who has the power? How does the organisation react on
changes? Who are the (in)formal leaders?

In the third part the attention will be on “Managing yourself in role”. The primary task is to explore the
way you take up your role in relation to the aim of the organization: What kind of role(s) do you take
up in your organization? In what way is your role influenced by your experience, background or
personality? How can you facilitate the aim of the organization? How can you help others in their role?
Professional and social skills are developed that will help you function better in your role, e.g. active
listening, feedback, coaching, functioning conversations, bad news conversations, and conflict – and
negotiation.

During the course we are working with personal experiences of the participants, simulations,
reflections, tests, role-play, theory exchange and assignments. Theory is as much as possible
illustrated by practical examples and the offered views and skills are directly applicable in the present-
day professional practice

The management training is organized by the Utrecht School of Governance (USG), an academic
knowledge centre of the University of Utrecht. Its courses, research and consultancy activities focus
on current issues facing public service organizations. Special areas of interest include politics,
governance, organization, culture, HRM and communication. For more information, please visit our
